Moral Compass Competition

When we hold the International Business Ethics Case Competition in person, we begin with an exercise that helps teams meet people from other schools—and use their “ethical imagination” in the process. Students are asked to form groups in which no one knows one another. Everyone then introduces themselves and shares an interesting detail (an unusual hobby, accomplishment, experience, or the like). The group’s task is to take those details and blend them into a story with some sort of ethical issue. During IBECC we then post the stories; everyone votes on them; and we award a prize to the members of the top teams—a small compass, which is why we call this our “moral compass” competition.

Here’s an example of the sort of thing we ask teams to do.

This year’s competition is online, and it’s open to any undergraduate or graduate student interested–whether or not you’re participating in the IBECC team competitions. Please register by Friday, April 15. You will be assigned to a team of 3-4 and given the appropriate contact information. Your team should turn in its story by Tuesday, April 19. Voting will take place through Sunday, April 24. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 25.

The “small print”: This competition is limited to 60 students. We may limit the number of students from any one school to no more than 10-15. If you have any questions, please write to us at info@ibecc.net.
