“Moral compass” competition

When we hold IBECC in person, we begin with an exercise that helps teams meet people from other schools—and use their “ethical imagination” in the process. Students are asked to form groups in which no one knows one another. Everyone then introduces themselves and shares an interesting detail (an unusual hobby, accomplishment, experience, or the like). The group’s task is to take those details and blend them into a story with some sort of ethical issue. During IBECC we then post the stories; everyone votes on them; and we award a prize to the members of the top teams—a small compass. We call this our “moral compass competition.” (For examples from last year, see https://ibecc.net/moral-compass-competition/ and https://ibecc.net/moral-compass-exercise-example/.)

In the past, we limited this to teams participating in IBECC. This year, we’re going to open this up to schools not participating, but we want to give first priority to members of teams registered. (We’ll open this up to other schools tomorrow, March 31.) For more information and to register, go to https://ibecc.net/moral-compass-competition-2/.

Please register no later than April 5. You will be assigned to a team of 3-4 and given the appropriate contact information. Your team will turn in its story by Monday, April 13. Voting will take place through Sunday, April 18. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 19.

You’ll receive more instructions after you’ve registered and your team has been formed.
