Biathlon Scoring Illustrated

A team’s biathlon score is determined by a combination of performances on the presentation and on the ‘run/jog/walk’ or ‘tourist’ challenge.

Presentation score

The überjudge of each division will fill out a judging form for each team which will give a score. All team scores will be ordered from high to low, and then rank ordered (e.g., 1, 2, 3, …).

Team A            410      1

Team B            408      2

Team C            405      3

Run/jog/walk score

1. Times will be recorded and ordered according to finishing place in gender.

Team A/Student A (male)        28:00   1

Team B/Student B (female)     28:05   1

Team C/Student C (male)        29:30   2

Team C/Student D (male)        29:35   3

Team A/Student E (male)         32:00   4

Team B/Student E (female)      32:05   2

2. The team run/jog/walk raw score will be determined by adding finishing place in gender scores and ranked low to high.

Team A            1 + 4 = 5          2

Team B            1 + 2 = 3          1

Team C            2 + 3 = 5          2

3. Presentation and biathlon scores are combined and rank ordered according to cross country scoring. In the case of a tie, preference will go to the team with the higher percentage of team participation. If there’s still a tie, preference will go to the team with the higher average number of steps per member. Low scores win.

Team A            2 out of 3 team members participated (67%)             2 – .67 = 1.33

Team B            3 out of 3 team members participated (100%)           1 – 1 = 0

Team C            3 out of 3 team members participated (100%)           2 – 1 = 1

4. Adjusted score determines ranking which determines final biathlon score.

Team A (1.33) 3

Team B (0)      1

Team C (1)      2

5. Presentation and biathlon scores are combined. Low scores win.

Team A            1 + 3 = 4

Team B            2 + 1 = 3

Team C            3 + 2 = 5

6. Low scores determine final order.

Team B (3)      1 WINNER

Team A (4)      2 RUNNER-UP

Team C (5)      3

Tourist score

1. Team score will be based on the total number of steps of the team members. In order to encourage maximum participation, this total will be adjusted according to the percentage of the team that participates.

Team A (3 members; 2 participated)
Total number of steps 16,015 * .67 = 10,730

Team B (5 members; 2 members participated)
Total number of steps 20,000 * .4 =  8,000

Team C/ (4 members; 4 participated)
Total number of steps 12,000 * 1.0 = 12,000

2. Teams will be ranked high to low.

Team A            10,730             2

Team B            8,000               3

Team C            12,000

3. Presentation and biathlon scores are combined and rank ordered according to cross country scoring. In case of a tie, preference will go to the team with the higher percentage of team participation. If there’s still a tie, preference will to go to the team with the higher average number of steps per member. Low scores win.

Team A            1 + 2 = 4          (67% participation) RUNNER-UP

Team B            2 + 3 = 5

Team C            3 + 1 = 4          (100% participation) WINNER

MIXED TEAMS/INDEPENDENT RUNNERS

Teams that have some members participate in the run/jog/walk and others who tourist will be put in the tourist division. Runners/walkers on mixed teams will be assigned 8,000 steps in the biathlon competition. Any runner will still be eligible for the ‘fastest male/female’ prizes.
